About the course:

An exciting course that builds and reinforces the high standard of Musical Theatre at the College and in the local area. The course combines dance, singing and drama – allowing the students to follow specialised pathways or to develop their skills more broadly – and features a range of showcase opportunities.

The course is delivered in the facilities surrounding the Northbrook Theatre, including the new studio theatre, ten dance and rehearsal studios, make-up and costume workshops and extensive production facilities. It provides an excellent stepping stone on to higher level courses and a career in the profession.

Students study a range of performance skills including: musical theatre, rehearsing, voice and singing techniques, actor training, physical theatre, contemporary dance, choreography and jazz.

Students will be assessed through a range of assignments which include practical demonstrations and performances which are, in turn, supported by written coursework to support their practice. There are no exams.

If you have less that grade C/4 in GCSE English or Maths, you will also study that subject at college.

Uniform is comfortable blacks. For example: black t-shirt, black leotard, black tights/leggings, hoodie & joggers/tracksuit.

All students need portable USB flash drive.

Northbrook Theatre T-shirts, Hoodies, Joggers and onesies are available to buy directly from the department but are not compulsory.

Entry Requirements:

To start on this course you need:

At least 4 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, preferably including English and maths
or
a relevant Level 2 qualification, including English and maths requirements.

Applicants are auditioned.

(If you will not have the above qualifications, you may be able to start by doing a year on the Level 2 course in Performance, before applying to move on to this Level 3 course.)

Progression / Career:

After 1 year you can achieve a University of the Arts London (UAL) Level 3 Diploma in Performing Arts. This means you can apply for the Extended Diploma course (below).

After 2 years you can achieve a University of the Arts London (UAL) Extended Diploma in Performing Arts.

This is equivalent to 3 A Levels. This means you can apply for university level courses or seek work in industry. Students also apply to many other specialist courses at universities/drama schools. These have included Northbrook FdA Degree Musical Theatre, Mountview, East 15, Central School of Speech and Drama, Guildhall, Arts Ed, Guildford, Birds College, Tiffany’s and LIPA. The qualification attracts 72, 120 and 168 UCAS tariff points for Pass, Merit and Distinction grades respectively.

Funding & Financial Support:

Age 16-17 starters -You will not have to pay fees on condition you are still under 19 on 31st August in each year of the course.
